Croplands of the World in the 21st Century

Summary

The main purpose of the map is to allow comparisons to be made between the actual location of croplands and the area that is suitable for growing crops according to the authors' "cropland distribution model."

Specifically, the map shows the croplands of Olson et al. (Olson, J.S., J.A. Watts and L.J. Allison, 1983, Carbon in live vegetation of major world ecosystems, ORNL 5862, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and the potential croplands under contemporary climate estimated by the authors' model.

Color legend:

  • Blue: Wetland
  • Red: Olson et al. (1983) & Xiao et al. (this study)
  • Green: Olson et al. (1983)
  • Yellow: Xiao et al. (this study)
