This page is generally oriented towards instructors.
The companion page, Help:Course, provides guidance for navigation and editing within the Course: namespace.

Princeton's Blackboard service allows instructors to create a "Wiki" link from a Blackboard course to a corresponding "wikispace" on the QED website. To understand how this works, it is important to understand that the QED website is structured into "namespaces", such as "User:", "Course:", and "Project:". The "Course:" namespace is for courses.

The main QED page for a course typically will have a name of the form Course:XYZ123 where XYZ123 is the primary course designation, such as SOC284. However, this is not a requirement, e.g. the Mapping Globalization project and the Course:MG folder share the "MG" prefix, as well as a common logo and sidebar.

Please note that setting up the "Wiki" link for a course on Blackboard does not automatically restrict write-access to the corresponding QED course pages.

See below for details.

Restricting Access to Pages within a Course Folder

The default is for all pages within a course folder such as Course:SOC284 to be both readable and writeable by anyone in the Princeton University community who is logged in to the QED website. These access restrictions, however, can be further narrowed.

If you are an instructor and wish to restrict read and/or write access to course participants, then please email qed@princeton.edu indicating the course identifier and what type of access you wish to restrict in this manner.

Similarly, if access has been restricted to course participants but you wish to add guests, please send an email to qed@princeton.edu giving details, including the netids of the guests.

In either case, please also indicate whether you want the ability to update the access control lists (ACLs) yourself.

ACLs

The ACL for limiting read-access to pages for a course XYZ123 is kept on the page Course:XYZ123/read: and similarly the ACL governing write-access is kept on the page Course:XYZ123/edit:. However, these pages only become effective when they are protected; to do so requires special privileges. For further details, see ACLs.

The Blackboard Connection

In Blackboard, the name of a course offering normally has the form COURSEID_SEMESTER (e.g. WWS572B_S2007). The default is to map this to Course:COURSEID (e.g. Course:WWS572B), but instructors may request a different mapping.

One or more links to the appropriate QED pages may be added to the course menu in Blackboard as described in the following sections.

Login with Registration

Instructors may add a special-purpose "Wiki" link to the Blackboard course menu. Besides making it easy to connect to the appropriate QED page, this special-purpose link also serves to register students on the QED server.

If you wish to restrict editing based on the list of registered students, please see the section above on Restricting Access to Pages within a Course Folder.

To add the special-purpose "Wiki" link to the Blackboard course menu, go to the "Control Panel" for the course, and select "Blog or Wiki".

Login without Registration

Instructors who want to restrict editing rights to their Course: pages on QED and who do not want the students enrolled in the course to have editing rights may wish to consider creating a direct link to the main page for the course on the QED server.

To add a direct link to the Blackboard course menu:

 1. go to the Control Panel for the course;
 2. click on "Manage Course Menu"
 3. click on "External Link" at the top.

For a course XYZ123, the URL to enter would be:

 https://qed.princeton.edu/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin&returnto=Course:XYZ123

Please also check the box for "Open in a new window".

Course-Restricted Maps

For copyright reasons, access to some of the maps in the QED collection of maps is restricted to students enrolled in specific courses at Princeton University. Thumbnails of these maps will nevertheless appear in the results returned by a Category Query.

Instructors at Princeton may arrange to gain access to these course-restricted maps by contacting Professor Miguel Centeno.

Boilerplate

Below is some text that may be helpful as a template for populating the main QED page for a course, normally of the form Course:XYZ123 where XYZ123 is the course designation. Please replace TITLE and XYZ123 in the following as appropriate.

This folder is for the use of students in the course "TITLE" (XYZ123).

Two ways to create a page in this folder are:
* use the prefix: Course:TITLE/
* create a relative link on a page in the folder.

For example, to create a page on "Frank Gehry", you could, for example:
* type Course:TITLE/Frank Gehry in the search box, and then press the Go button, or
* follow these steps:
*# click on the edit tab of this page
*# add the text: Gehry
*# press the Show preview button at the bottom of the page
*# follow the Frank Gehry hyperlink

Please sign any contributions you make to discussion pages by clicking on the signature button on the editing menu.
Equivalently, add four tildes like so:<br/> ~~~~

* Help:Course
