==New pages==
New pages can be created in several ways, for example:
# create a link (e.g. <nowiki>[[TigerNet/Glossary]]</nowiki>) in an existing page, and then visit the link; 
# type the full name of the new page in the '''search''' box, press the '''Go''' button, and then follow the instructions to create the page;
# add a new page to a specific [[Help:Category|Category]] when visiting a category page.

In all cases, spaces and underscores may be used (e.g. <nowiki>[[Course:ABC123/sandbox]]</nowiki>), but each sequence of consecutive spaces and underscores will be treated as a single underscore.

{{qed}} pages may be arranged in a hierarchy that is analogous to the Windows or Unix folder system. For example, assuming your {{qed}} login is ''Tiger'' you could effectively create a subfolder under User:Tiger by creating pages such as User:Tiger/ART101/Degas, User:Tiger/ART101/Chagall, etc.

The '''Relative Hyperlinks''' feature makes it easy to create pages within a page hierarchy as described [[#Relative Hyperlinks|below]].

===Naming a New Page===

Page names may contain spaces and many special characters including punctuation, but the colon has a special meaning and to avoid confusion should usually only be used in connection with [[Help:namespaces|namespaces]]. 
More specifically, the following characters are not allowed in page titles:
:* <nowiki># < > [ ] | { }</nowiki>
:* The non-printable characters with values 0 through 31, and the "delete" character 127.

Some other considerations are as follows:
* + will be translated to a space
* Spaces and underscores are treated as being equivalent, but underscores will be displayed as spaces.
* Consecutive spaces and underscores are treated as a single underscore except that leading and trailing spaces and underscores are ignored.
* The case of letters is significant in page names except that if the first character is lowercase, it is converted to uppercase.
* The "/" cannot be used as the first character of a page name and should generally not be used as the last character.
* The "%" character should be avoided because of a problem with the [[wikipedia:Apache_HTTP_Server|Apache server]].

To create a page within a [[Help:folder|folder]], the name of the page must begin with the folder name. For example, the page [[MG/Maps]] is in the "MG/" folder. To request that a new folder with its own logo be created, send {{EMAIL AN ADMIN}}.

===Creating a blank or empty page===
To create an empty page, first create a page with the desired name (that is, save it with some content &mdash; a single character will suffice), and then  delete the contents. To create a blank page in one step, add a blank character such as &amp;nbsp;

Hyperlinks to {{qed}} pages that do not (yet) exist are usually displayed in red, [[Mediawiki:APageThatDoesNotExist|like so]]. If you are logged in and have permission to create a page in the [[Help:namespaces|namespace]] specified by the link, then clicking on the link will allow you to create the page.

==Relative Hyperlinks==

Pages on {{qed}} can be organized into page/subpage hierarchies using the forward slash ("/") character as a delimiter.

Relative links within a page hierarchy can be created using the "wiki syntax" indicated in the following table, which assumes the page on which the indicated wikitext occurs is named "Top/a":

==Interwiki Links==
As illustrated above, a special notation for so-called interwiki links is available to simplify creating links to other web sites. For example:
* <nowiki>[[google:tiger]]</nowiki> abbreviates a Google search and appears like this: [[google:tiger]]
* <nowiki>[[wikipedia:tiger]] is short for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tiger]</nowiki> and appears like this: [[wikipedia:tiger]]
* <nowiki>[[wikipedia:tiger|]] is short for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tiger|]</nowiki> and appears like this: [[wikipedia:tiger|tiger]]

==Miscellaneous Tips==

* If you would like a spelling checker that works with the MediaWiki editor, the [http://toolbar.google.com Google toolbar] may be used.

* If <nowiki><br></nowiki> does not force the kind of break you were expecting (e.g. after a table), use [[Template:Clr]] (i.e., insert <nowiki>{{Clr}}</nowiki> at the desired break point).

* <nowiki>{{subst:Template:GFDL}}</nowiki> differs from <nowiki>{{Template:GFDL}}</nowiki> in that the prefix '''subst:''' causes the content of the template to be inserted into the page source when the page is saved, whereas the latter reference is resolved when the page is rendered &mdash; see [[Help:Dynamic Pages]].
