On this website, pages in any one namespace can be arranged into a hierarchy of folders that is approximately analogous to the directory structure of computer operating systems. On {{qed}}, the folder-delimiter character is "/" in all namespaces except for the Image: namespace.  

For example, [[MG]] is both an ordinary page and the root page of the folder containing all the pages with the "MG/" prefix. Pages such as [[MG/Maps]] are also called "subpages" of the MG page.

Anyone who is logged in can create a new folder, but if you want to create a new top-level folder, please first review the  [[Help:New folders|guidelines for creating a new folder]].

==Terminology==
The '''folder delimiter character''' is "/" except in the '''Image:''' namespace, in which it is "=".

A '''top-level folder''' is one whose name contains no interior folder delimiter character. Thus '''MG/''' is a top-level folder. 

The '''root page''' of a folder is the page whose name is the folder's prefix up to but excluding the first folder-delimiter character. Thus the root page of the MG/ folder is the page: [[MG]].

==Relative Hyperlinks==
Links to pages within a folder are most easily created and maintained using '''relative hyperlinks''', e.g.
rather than typing <nowiki>[[Tibetan Buddhism/Glossary]]</nowiki> on the <nowiki>[[Tibetan Buddhism]]</nowiki> page,
one can simply type <nowiki>[[/Glossary]]</nowiki>. See [[Help:Editing#Relative Hyperlinks|Relative Hyperlinks]] for help.

==Folder-Based Customization==
A distinguishing logo and customized left-hand side navigation menu can be assigned to each top-level folder. This affects the appearance of the root page and all its subpages, as can be seen by visiting the [[MG]] page.<!-- keyword: sidebar -->

==Folder-Based Access Control==
Restricting read-access and/or write-access to pages and files on this website is often accomplished by defining access control lists that affect all pages within a top-level folder. 

The main mechanism for defining folder-based restrictions is documented at [[{{SITENAME}}:Folder-Based Access Restrictions|Folder-Based Access Restrictions]]. 

Additional restrictions can be defined on a page-by-page basis within a folder using
[[{{SITENAME}}:Category-Based Access Restrictions|Category-Based Access Restrictions]].
