QED now supports Google Earth, a service that combines satellite imagery, maps, and software to give a three-dimensional view of the planet.

If the Google Earth software has not been installed on your computer, you can click on this icon to download the free Google Earth program:
.

Once the Google Earth software has been installed on your computer, then whenever you see a hyperlink such as the following one, you can click on the main link (here Trade Routes) to use Google Earth to view the geographical information in the data file that has been uploaded to QED:

google_earth_link.gif Trade Routes (help · info)

If you are not sure whether the Google Earth software has been installed, you can in any case click on the link (Trade Routes in the above example). If the software has been installed, the window that opens should make that clear. Otherwise, you can simply close the window, download the software, and revisit the link.

Further Details

On this website, references to files that can be viewed using Google Earth are normally displayed using the quartet as illustrated above:

  1. the icon google_earth_link.gif
  2. a link to the geographical data file
  3. a superscript help hyperlink, which leads back to this page
  4. a supercript info hyperlink, which leads to the information page for the geographical data file.

Searching for Google Earth files

To search for previously uploaded .kmz files, one can for example use the Search form on the File list page or click here to do so now.

Troubleshooting

If Google Earth has been installed but clicking on a link to a Google Earth file does not automatically bring up the Google Earth application, then try saving the file on your local computer and opening it. All else failing, you can start the Google Earth application and point it to the file or URL.

Notes for Editors

To create the four-part link, use Template:GoogleEarth.

Uploading a Geographical Data File

You can upload both .kml and .kmz files to QED in the normal way using the Upload file link in the toolbox.
