The '''Image:''' namespace can hold any of the permitted upload file types as documented on the [[Help:Upload]] page. If you would like additional file types to be allowed, please {{EMAIL AN ADMIN}}.

==Searching for Images==
To search for previously uploaded images, one can for example use the '''Search form''' on the
[[Special:Imagelist|File list]] page. More general search techniques can also be used &mdash; see [[Help:Search]].

==Embedding Images==
Images and other types of media files can be embedded in {{SITENAME}} pages whether or not they have been uploaded to {{SITENAME}}.

The simplest and often the best way to embed images that have been uploaded is to use the so-called wiki syntax for doing so, e.g. <nowiki>[[Image:my.jpg]]</nowiki>. To add a caption, use the "thumb" option, e.g. <nowiki>[[Image:my.jpg|thumb|155px]]</nowiki>. See [[Help:Uploaded_Files]] for details. This method uses sophisticated algorithms for image resizing and should be used if the quality of resized images obtained by other methods is unsatisfactory.

By contrast, the [[{{SITENAME}}:Image|<nowiki><image></nowiki>]] tag provides a simple, uniform framework for embedding images, whether they have been uploaded or not. This tag also provides more options than the wiki syntax, notably for specifying the hovertext and hyperlink. The HTML [http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/objects.html#h-13.2 &lt;img>] tag can also be used for both types of images, but is considerably more complex to use. Both these methods rely on the browser to perform resizing.

==Access Restrictions==
There are several ways to limit access to the media description page and the underlying media file.

===Restricting Read-Access to Logged-In Users===
If you want the highest degree of assurance that a media file will permanently be visible only to logged-in users, then it is recommended that you include the copyright symbol &copy; in its name, normally as the first character. You can use the [[Help:Characters|sequence of characters]] &amp;copy; to do so. 

A more flexible approach is to place the media description page in the '''Restricted''' category by including the text <nowiki>[[Category:Restricted]]</nowiki> anywhere on the description page. This restriction can be undone by anyone who can edit the description page, and therefore it may be appropriate to impose additional write-restrictions on the description page itself. 
Currently this can only be done on request to [mailto:qed@princeton.edu qed@princeton.edu].

==Slideshows and Simple Animations==

The template [[Template:NextImageControls]] produces control buttons which, in conjunction with some boilerplate HTML, makes it fairly easy to create a slideshow of a sequence of images as illustrated by this  [[:Image:The West-Eurasia World System, 3600-1400 BC‎ | simple animation]].

==Animated GIFs==
Some animated GIFs do not loop. If you wish to provide a button like this {{RestartTheAnimation}} to restart the animation, [[Template:RestartTheAnimation]] is often sufficient.
