[http://www.jmol.org Jmol] is a widely-used program that supports viewing three-dimensional chemical structures interactively and stereoscopically.

The ''J'' in ''Jmol'' stands for [[wikipedia:Java (programming_language)|Java]].

The Jmol extension for MediaWiki has been installed on the {{qed}} website, allowing one to embed one or more Jmol windows within regular pages. It also allows "popup Jmol applets" to be displayed.

If your browser is configured to allow Java applications, then you should be able to see a Jmol window by clicking [[User:Student/Jmol|here]]. '''Please allow 10 to 15 seconds for the applet to load.'''

==Using the Jmol Extension==

One can embed a Jmol "applet" on a page by referring to data on a remote site, in an uploaded file, on a separate page, or by including the data on the page itself. 

The example on the discussion page of this page includes the data on the page itself. Buttons and other types of controls can also be added.

===Restrictions on uploading files===
This website restricts the types of files that may be uploaded based on the suffix of the file name.
There is also a limit on the size of files that can be uploaded.
 
For a dynamically generated list of file suffixes that are currently allowed, see [[QED:Variables#File Extensions|QED Variables]]. This page also shows the current limit on the file size.
