The server on which QED runs was upgraded to RHEL5 at 1pm. If you notice any anomalies, please send mail to qed@princeton.edu.

2009-06-11

A new version of the Cite extension for creating footnotes using the <ref> tag has been installed. It resolves a problem affecting anonymous users. If you encounter any difficulties, please send mail to qed@princeton.edu.

2009-05-01

Thumbnails of images that are included on image description pages using the transclude template should now be shown in all automatically generated galleries of thumbnails, such as Category Queries results pages, category pages, and the gallery tag.

2009-03-19

QED now supports jsMath for rendering pages that use the <math> tag. Currently this rendering is only available to logged-in users who have set their personal preferences to use jsMath. See jsMath for further details.

2009-03-18

  • A new extension allowing one to embed data from a variety of sources within QED pages has been installed on QED on a provisional basis. The data may come from CSV or XML files, or from any URL that makes the data available in these two formats. Data may also come from QED pages. The data may be filtered, and the information to be displayed on one page can be assembled from several sources. See External Data for details.
  • The bookmarklet for QED has been revised to be compatible with browsers such as Google Chrome. See Tips.

2009-03-18

Several templates for formatting text within boxes have been added or enhanced. See Help:Boxed text for further details and examples.

2009-03-11

Documentation about the CSS datatable class for use with tables has been added — see Help:Tables#Predefined Table Classes.

2008-10-26

The row colors in tables can now be automatically alternated using the predefined zebra class. For example, one can specify class="zebra wikitable" instead of class=wikitable. See Help:zebra for further details.

2008-09-24

Except for read-access restrictions, folder-based access restrictions now apply to the top-level page of a folder for which restrictions have been put into effect.

  • The top-level page of a folder is not subject to folder-based read-access restrictions so that editors of the folder can provide guidance to those who are denied access to the contents of the folder.

2008-08-28

If you want the ACLs of a folder, say "FOLDER", to govern access to an uploaded file and its description page, then you can add the template reference to the text of the description page, e.g. . Please note:

  • read-access to the uploaded file will be limited to those who can read its description page;
  • this technique can also be used to refer to folders in other namespaces, e.g. adding  will enforce the restrictions defined for Princeton:FOLDER;
  • the ACL page of a folder is only effective if it has been "protected" by a system administrator.

2008-07-25

Guest accounts are now available, mainly to allow a folder administrator to grant access to a specific folder that would otherwise be inaccessible to an individual who does not have a Princeton netid. Guests cannot view pages in the Course:, Princeton:, or Project: namespaces except as authorized on a folder-by-folder basis.

2008-07-18

A new template has been added for links that should open in a new tab or window. This template uses a special icon to provide a visual indicator of the nature of the link. For example, http://www.google.com produces Google. See Help:Target for further details.

2008-07-03

The QED website underwent a major upgrade at 3pm. It is now running MediaWiki 1.12.0. Please email qed@princeton.edu in case of difficulties.

  • The gallery tag now has options for specifying the size of the thumbnails, and the number of images per row.
  • The #macro parser function must now be used in template definitions if template variables occur with XML-style tag extensions. See Help:macro for details.

2008-05-21

The EmbedVideo extension now supports blip.tv videos.

2008-04-25

The online documentation has been updated to clarify two details regarding uploaded files that have been placed in the Restricted category:

  • the only supported way to download such files is via the file's description page, that is, the page in the Image: namespace;
  • access to thumbnails of images in the Restricted category is unrestricted.

2008-04-22

Template:webshare has been added to make it easy to create links to files stored on Princeton's Webshare server. This template can also be used to transclude images from the Webshare (Xythos) server. See the documentation for further details.

2008-04-04

To make a page in your User: space private, simply add the text anywhere on the page. We recommend that you only hide subpages, i.e. pages of the form "User:Tiger/No Peeking", in this manner. Pages that are hidden using this mechanism will be inaccessible to everyone but yourself, though snippets of text from the page may show up in search results. See Template:Restricted:User for further details.

2008-02-18

The __NOTOCNUM__ extension has been installed. To prevent numbering of the sections and subsections in a Table of Contents, include the __NOTOCNUM__ directive on the page.

2008-02-18

When uploading a file, selecting the licensing option to restrict access to logged-in users now automatically adds the Category:Restricted tag.

2008-02-15

Software to support the <timeline> tag has been installed on a provisional basis. For further information, see EasyTimeline.

2007-12-18

The navigation and search boxes in the left-hand sidebar have been simplified: the Google search form has been replaced by an Advanced search hyperlink, which points to the Special:Prefixindex page, which in turn includes the Google search form.

2007-12-11

The <image> tag has a new parameter, auto, to make it easier to float text around images. For example, auto=left has a similar effect to float=left but automatically manages margins, borders, and any caption.

2007-11-19

Two templates for formatting quotations have been added:

Template:quotation produces a box like this. See also Template:Quote.

Template:quote produces formatted text like this. Optionally, source information may also be specified. See also Template:Quotation.

2007-11-15

The standard MediaWiki <imagemap> tag is now supported. This tag, in conjunction with the "Image map editor" referenced on the imagemap help page, makes it easy to add multiple "hot spots" to embedded images.

2007-11-13

The <image> tag now supports the style parameter.

2007-10-29

Support for the <math> tag has been upgraded to the MediaWiki 1.11.0 version (September 10, 2007). The following commands are now additionally supported:

  • hline, vline
  • mathord, mathbin, mathrel, mathopen, mathclose, mathpunct

2007-09-26

  • A relative link with a leading "/" (such as /Glossary) is no longer displayed with the leading "/". This avoids the tedium of having to write Glossary.

2007-09-21

Folders can now be customized so that a kind of folder-specific "keyboard" of special characters can be displayed whenever a page in the folder is edited. See Help:Customization for further details.

2007-09-14

Links to pages within a folder are most easily created and maintained using relative hyperlinks, e.g. rather than typing Tibetan Buddhism/Glossary on the Tibetan Buddhism page, one can simply type /Glossary, which (as of 2007-09-26), will be displayed as "Glossary" (without the leading "/"). See Relative Hyperlinks for help.

2007-08-31

  • The default "display title" of a page with a name that includes a "/" is now just the substring following the last "/". See Help:Displaytitle for further information.

2007-08-21

2007-08-20

  • If you use Firefox or a Mozilla browser and would like to try a rich text editor on QED, you might like to try wikEd. It has many useful features, including the ability to paste formatted text from Microsoft Word, web pages, and other sources. See Help:WikEd for instructions.

2007-08-18

  • You can now modify the displayed title of a page. To change the displayed title of a page to Xyzzy, include the following on that page (preferably at the top):

2007-08-15

  • The summary statistics page that gives statistics about QED has been expanded, e.g. it includes the number of uploaded media files, the number of contributors, etc.
  • The tag for creating flyover images has been renamed <flyover>.

2007-08-09

  • It is now possible to flag any QED page to prevent anonymous users from being able to view it. Currently, this can be accomplished by adding the following text anywhere on the page: . This also has the effect of including a one-line notice (see Template:Restricted:Princeton) at the point of insertion. Please note:
  • flagging a page in this manner does not over-ride other access restrictions that may apply to the page;
  • the mechanism for flagging pages to be restricted to logged-in users may change.

2007-08-08

The EmbedVideo extension for embedding videos from the following services has been installed on QED:

See Help:Ev for details.

2007-08-07

  • The p: namespace has been renamed Princeton:. The main reason for the change is to make it clearer that access to pages in that namespace is restricted to members of the Princeton University community.

2007-08-03

  • The "tag this!" box in the left-hand side navigation bar includes links to several bookmarking services. These links make it quite easy to tag whichever QED page is being viewed. See Help:Tag this for further information.

2007-08-01

  • Description pages (i.e. pages in the Image namespace) can now be associated with a folder. Such pages will then appear as though they are in the folder. That is, the folder's logo, left-hand side navigation bar and stylesheet will be used. To customize description pages in this manner, see Help:Customization.

2007-07-25

  • QED now supports Jmol — the Java program for viewing three-dimensional chemical structures interactively and stereoscopically. See Help:Jmol.

2007-07-24

  • A new parameter ("thumb") has been added to the <image> tag for supporting thumbnails of Image: pages that would not otherwise have thumbnails. See <image> for details.
  • Template:transclude now uses this parameter.

2007-07-12

A CAPTION
you may see another image.

2007-07-02

  • The <math> tag has been extended to allow specification of vertical alignment. The syntax is: <math align=ALIGNMENT>

2007-04-26

  • When searching, anonymous users can no longer see snippets from pages in the non-public namespaces (Course:, Project: and Princeton:).

2007-04-09

  • The MediaWiki Google Maps Editor has been installed with some local enhancements — see Help:Google Maps.

2007-04-06

  • The <memorize> tag allows tables to be turned into interactive quizzes. Each table becomes both a "flashcard" and a "memory game". See Help:Memorize for an example and further details.

2007-04-04

  • It is now possible to create a page within a category by using the input box that appears at the top of most category pages once one has logged in. This input box does not appear for abstract categories such as Category:Top that are intended only to contain subcategories.

2007-03-30

  • The MediaWiki software underpinning QED was upgraded to version 1.9.3 at 12:30am. Please report any problems by sending mail to qed@princeton.edu.
  • Highlights of this upgrade include:
    • The procedure for creating sortable tables has been streamlined.
    • The DjVu image format is now fully supported in the same way that other image formats are supported, e.g. thumbnails are generated in image galleries.
  • The CategoryTree extension has been installed. It is used automatically on category pages. One can also use it to browse the category hierarchy or indeed the entire website by visiting the Special:CategoryTree page. It also provides the <categorytree> tag.
  • The Upload Files extension for uploading a batch of files has been installed. It can also be found in the Special pages listing.

2007-03-21

  • You can now directly access QED pages without having to specify "index.php":
    1. You can write "main" instead of "index.php", e.g. main/UC is equivalent to index.php/UC
    2. If a namespace is explicitly specified, then you can skip "index.php" altogether
      e.g. project:UC is equivalent to index.php/project:UC
    3. You can refer to pages in the main namespace using the special form "main:"
      e.g. main:UC is equivalent to main/UC
  • The hardware upgrade was completed just before 4pm. If you experience any difficulties, please send mail to qed@princeton.edu.
  • Requests directed to the old server (isaacnewton) for QED content are now being redirected to qed.princeton.edu.

2007-02-24

  • <math> support has been upgraded to the MediaWiki 1.9.2 level. Many additional functions are supported, including textstyle, color, overset, sideset, underset, stackrel, tfrac, dfrac, etc. For details, see Permalink11px.gif[1]. Consulting the most recent MediaWiki documentation about the <math> tag may also be helpful: Help:Formula.

One may choose to view the entire contents of a directory and all its direct and indirect subdirectories on a single page. (Access may be restricted, e.g. to princeton.edu domain.)

2006-07-17

  • The special page Special:CategoryQuery allows category queries based on set-intersection to be formulated. Editors may also determine the categories to be displayed, how they are grouped, and the heading of each group. See Help:Category Queries.

2006-07-06

  • In support of decentralized administration of folders, users listed on the protection page of a folder (e.g. the page Xyzzy/protect:) have "sysop" privileges in that folder if the protection page is itself protected.
  • A user with sysop privileges in a folder automatically inherits read and write privileges therein.

2006-06-30

  • The contents of the left-hand navigation bar can vary depending on whether one is logged-in.
