Viewing Images
- When viewing an image description page for a .jpg image, you may have to click twice to see the high resolution version:
- If the browser has reduced the image to fit on the screen, the cursor should appear as a small magnifying glass with a + like so:
- In MSIE7 you can use the Ctrl key with + and - to zoom in and out.
- To maximize the area available for viewing an image, use your browser's "Full Screen" mode:
- In many browsers (e.g. FF, MSIE), the short-cut key for toggling between "Full Screen" and cluttered screen is F11
- Alternatively, if your browser has a View button, click it and then Full Screen.
Bookmarklet
For quick access to QED pages, you may wish to use a bookmarklet. The following bookmarklet has been tested with Firefox and Google Chrome and should work with other browsers, possibly with minor modifications. One way to install it is as follows:
- Check that the browser Bookmarks Toolbar is open
- On Firefox, if in doubt, check the browser's View menu
- Install the bookmark by using the left mouse button to drag this QED hyperlink to the Bookmarks Toolbar
- The above image illustrates this using Firefox.
The Javascript is as follows:
Abbreviations
From within the princeton.edu domain, you can simply enter "qed" instead of "http://qed.princeton.edu" in your browser address bar. Other abbreviated forms are allowed. For example:
- qed/Help:Editing ≡ qed/main/Help:Editing (within the princeton.edu domain)
- qed.princeton.edu/Help:Editing ≡ qed.princeton.edu/main/Help:Editing
General Tips
(This section is the same as on the QED splash page.)
If the font is too small, try using your browser's command for increasing the font size. This is typically the "Ctrl +" key combination, or on Macs the "command +" combination. To stop the Internet Explorer security warning popups, see MSIE.
If you would like to edit an existing page or to create a new one, you must first login.
Many hyperlinks have helpful tips (sometimes called tool tips, hovertext, or balloon help) associated with them. For example, to see the hovertext associated with any of the menu items in the navigation box to the left, position the mouse cursor over one of the items, and leave it there for a moment until the hovertext appears.
Editing Tips
Spelling Checker
If you would like a spelling checker that works with the MediaWiki editor, the Google toolbar may be used. After installing the toolbar, click on Settings to activate the spell-check button if it is not already displayed.
Relative Hyperlinks
Within a page/subpage hierarchy, relative hyperlinks such as [[../]] may be used. See Help:Relative Links for further details.
WebSpace Links
See Template:Webspace for tips on creating links to files on the Webspace server (previously known as Webshare).
Interwiki Links
A special notation for so-called interwiki links is available to simplify creating links to other web sites. For example:
- [[google:tiger]] abbreviates a Google search and appears like this: google:tiger
- [[wikipedia:tiger]] is short for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tiger] and appears like this: wikipedia:tiger
- [[wikipedia:tiger|]] is short for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tiger tiger] and appears like this: tiger
Other interwiki prefixes can be viewed here.
Page Refresh
Under certain circumstances, you may want to refresh a QED page display, for example if you have viewed a page in one window and edited it in another. In this particular case, pressing the browser's Reload button will normally suffice. If not, please see Help:Refresh.
