In contrast to categories such as BCE that correspond to globally defined time periods, the category Ancient History is a relative term that generally covers a period beginning with the end of the Prehistory of a region. The end of ancient European history, for example, is conventionally said to coincide with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE.
