The Near East is a term used with some ambiguity to describe the region including Turkey, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. It thus includes the area of modern day Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, and Syria. In some contexts, the term may include the Arabian peninsula, and even Egypt.

With the possible exception of Egypt, the Near East lies within Category:Western Asia.

On this web site, Category:Western Asia and Category:Middle East are defined in geographical terms and should be used in preference to the Near East category for geographical classification.
