If you do not have access to Microsoft Word, here are some ways to view a ".doc" file using freeware programs:

Linking to an uploaded .doc file

This ... produces:
[[Media:SignHere.doc|xyzzy]] xyzzy a direct link to the file but without any indication the target is a DOC file.
[[Media:SignHere.doc|]] SignHere.doc a direct link which includes the .doc suffix.
{{doc|SignHere.doc}} SignHere.doc (help · info) normally three links, but help here refers to this page.
{{doc|SignHere.doc|xyzzy}} xyzzy (help · info) a variant of the preceding.

Alternatives to uploading a DOC file

Before uploading a DOC file, please consider the pros and cons of converting it to an alternative format, such as wiki markup or a mixture of wiki markup and HTML. See Help:Import for information about tools and strategies for doing so.

Here is a checklist of some points to consider:

  • ability to search for text using the QED Search capability
  • the need for hyperlinks into the DOC text
  • time-to-view
  • file size
  • ease of updating
  • consistency of user experience
  • cost of conversion
