Notes for Readers
Embedded Maps
If a page contains a Google Map, you can interact with it in the usual way:
- For a guided tour, see Explore Google Maps
- About Google Maps
Please note: use of Google Maps is governed by Google's Terms of Service for Google Maps.
The
Icon
If you see this
icon on a page, you should be able to click on the associated link to view the geographic data file using Google Maps.
Here is an example:
Muslim Routes (help ยท info)
Please note: It may take 20 seconds or so for the Google Maps window to appear.
On this website, KML and KMZ files that can be viewed using Google Maps are normally displayed using the quartet as illustrated above:
- the icon
- a special link to Google Maps
- a superscript help hyperlink, which leads back to this page
- a supercript info hyperlink, which leads to the information page for the geographical data file.
To search for previously uploaded .kml or .kmz files, one can for example use the Search form on the File list page or click here to do so now.
Notes for Editors
Editor's Map
To add a map to a page, or to edit an existing map on a page, simply edit (or create) the page, and then click on the make a map link that appears below the editing icons.
The interface is largely self-explanatory.
See Editor's Map for details.
Note that wiki markup including templates can be used in the captions.
Advanced Features of Google Maps
To take advantage of some features of Google Maps requires tweaking the attributes and body of the generated <googlemap> tag:
- tabbed captions
- the location marker to be used at a specific location
- the set of icons to be used as location markers
For example, a family of red, blue and green icons as illustrated below is available on QED:

See Help:Googlemap for details.
Use of the Google Maps service on this website is subject to Google's Terms of Use. In particular, "the Service may be used only for services that are generally accessible to consumers without charge."
Uploading a Geographical Data File
You can upload .kmz and .kml files to QED in the normal way using the Upload file link in the toolbox.
To create the four-part link for a .kmz or .kml file, use Template:GoogleMaps.
Troubleshooting
Firefox
If a map fails to appear, it may be because of the browser's security setting for images. The following procedure should resolve the issue:
- In the browser's address box, enter "about:config"
- Type "permissions" in the Filter: box
- Check that the Value for "permissions.default.image" is 1
- To set it to 1, right-click on whatever value is there and select "Reset" if that is an option, or "Modify" otherwise.
