Searching for Images
To search for previously uploaded images, one can for example use the Search form on the File list page. More general search techniques can also be used — see Help:Search.
Embedding Images
Images and other types of media files can be embedded in QED pages whether or not they have been uploaded to QED.
The simplest and often the best way to embed images that have been uploaded is to use the so-called wiki syntax for doing so, e.g. [[Image:my.jpg]]. To add a caption, use the "thumb" option, e.g. [[Image:my.jpg|thumb|155px]]. See Help:Uploaded_Files for details. This method uses sophisticated algorithms for image resizing and should be used if the quality of resized images obtained by other methods is unsatisfactory.
By contrast, the <image> tag provides a simple, uniform framework for embedding images, whether they have been uploaded or not. This tag also provides more options than the wiki syntax, notably for specifying the hovertext and hyperlink. The HTML <img> tag can also be used for both types of images, but is considerably more complex to use. Both these methods rely on the browser to perform resizing.
Access Restrictions
There are several ways to limit access to the media description page and the underlying media file.
Restricting Read-Access to Logged-In Users
If you want the highest degree of assurance that a media file will permanently be visible only to logged-in users, then it is recommended that you include the copyright symbol © in its name, normally as the first character. You can use the sequence of characters © to do so.
A more flexible approach is to place the media description page in the Restricted category by including the text [[Category:Restricted]] anywhere on the description page. This restriction can be undone by anyone who can edit the description page, and therefore it may be appropriate to impose additional write-restrictions on the description page itself. Currently this can only be done on request to qed@princeton.edu.

Slideshows and Simple Animations
The template Template:NextImageControls produces control buttons which, in conjunction with some boilerplate HTML, makes it fairly easy to create a slideshow of a sequence of images as illustrated by this simple animation.
Animated GIFs
Some animated GIFs do not loop. If you wish to provide a button like this
to restart the animation, Template:RestartTheAnimation is often sufficient.For information about using PhotoShop to create an animated GIF, see [1].
