QED has several namespaces arranged in pairs: a primary namespace and its associated namespace for discussion, for example:

  • the main namespace, which is unnamed, and its pair, Talk:
  • User: and User talk:
  • Project: and Project talk:

QED content is divided into namespaces for several reasons, for example:

  • One can define access restrictions on a namespace-by-namespace basis without the need for access control lists;
  • One can easily restrict searches using the Search facility to any set of namespaces.

Creating a new page in a specific namespace

A page name can have any of the forms:

  • NAMESPACE:FOLDER/TITLE
  • NAMESPACE:TITLE
  • FOLDER/TITLE
  • TITLE

where:

  • NAMESPACE is one of the predefined namespace names (such as Princeton)
  • TITLE has no "/" characters in it
  • FOLDER may include "/" characters except in the Image namespace.

For further details about FOLDER and TITLE, see Help:Editing#Naming a New Page.

To create a page in the main namespace, no namespace specification need be given. For example, to create a page named "Major Choices" one could just type "Major Choices" (without the quotation marks) in the search box and press the Go button. Similarly, to create a page named "Calendar" in the "Major Choices" folder in the main namespace, one would use the string "Major Choices/Calendar".

To create a new page in a specific namespace other than the main one, the namespace must be given explicitly. For example:

With the search box wikitext
Princeton:My Page [[Princeton:My Page]]

Existing Namespaces

To see a complete list of QED namespaces that can hold content, click on the Search button in the search box, leaving the text box empty. Or equivalently, click here.

When deciding which namespace to use when adding content, please consult the following table. In this table

  • "PU" signifies members of the Princeton University community including specially authorized guests.
  • The default access restrictions are shown.

Additional restrictions can be applied, for example on a folder-by-folder basis. For further details about restricting access, see Help:Access Restrictions.

Name Default read-access restrictions Default write-access restrictions Comment
(main) public PU
Category: public PU
Course: PU PU Restrictions to members of course on request
Image: public PU Equivalent to Media:. See Help:Restricting Access to Uploaded Files
Princeton: PU PU If additional read-restrictions are required, consider using the Project: namespace
Project: PU PU
Template: public PU
User: public PU

Searches

If you wish to restrict searches to a specific set of namespaces, simply leave the search text box empty and press the Search button.

You can also control the default list of namespaces which are searched when you use the Search button by modifying your preferences.

To search within a namespace by page title prefix, use the Advanced search form.

Miscellaneous

Some other important points about namespaces are:

  • The number of namespaces can be increased.
  • As a rule, except for anonymous users, read-access in a primary namespace implies both read and write privileges in the corresponding discussion namespace.
