Timelines via tables
Timelines can be constructed quite easily using tables.
The following timeline illustrates several techniques:
- how to use wikitable syntax to create a timeline;
- how to use "width" specifications to achieve the appropriate timeline scale without having to perform any scaling arithmetic;
- the use of a single template (period color) to encode the mapping from names (such as "archean") to colors.

The Timeline template can be used to create very simple timelines such as the following:
