Database Architecture
The data associated with the Mapping Globalization project is housed in a database that allows for easy querying and access. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the the Mapping Globalization project's database architecture.
Each white box in the schematic represents an individual table that contains data, each connected to other tables in a relational database structure.
The grouped WTA tables (wtathresholds, wtaports, wtacommodities, and wtacountries) correspond to the World Trada Analyzer developed by Statistics Canada. These tables house select trade information between countries for several target years.
The other tables (mgcountry and mgcountry_year) are primarily used to house the "linking" information for the Mapping Globalization database, the key fields relate one table to another. These key fields are used to link current tables shown here and will be used to link tables designated for future inclusion, making it easy to expand and enhance this database.
Secondarily, mgcountry and mgcountry_year contain other important information such as a country's land use and a country's alternate names.
