The term "protected" is usually used on this website in the context of editing privileges.
The term protected page is specifically used to mean a page which has been protected from editing by anyone except an administrator. If you have the administrative right to protect a page, you will see a protect tab in addition to the edit tab for that page.
The "protection" privilege
In the Course:, Princeton:, and Project: namespaces, protection privileges are normally granted to faculty members, principal investigators, and their designees.
The <php> tag
As a security precaution, the <php> tag will in general only be interpreted on a page if the page has been protected (see Category:PHP).
