Background

The QED service supports several types of editable calendars, including event calendars which can be edited in a WYSIWYG-like manner using a "Rich Text Editor" (RTE). QED's "Rich Text Editor" is basically the same as used by Roxen. However it is not the default editor on QED so if you want to use it, please follow the directions in the following section.

These guidelines assume that the browser you are using has javascript enabled. If you have disabled Javascript, please at least enable it for qed.princeton.edu

Enabling the Rich Text Editor

If you would like to use the Rich Text Editor, first login and then set your preferences by proceeding as follows:

You should now see several rich editor options.

To enable the Rich Text Editor, deselect Disable rich editor. That is, remove the check mark from the box.

At this point, you may wish to review the other "rich editor" options.

We suggest that at least initially your rich editor selections be as follows:

☐ Disable rich editor
☐ Start with rich editor disabled
☑ Use toggle to switch between wikitext and rich editor (replace textarea with rich editor)

When you've made your selections, click the Save button at the foot of the page. The saved settings will be used whenever you login.

For further details about the Rich Text Editor, see Help:Rich Text Editor.

Editing Event Calendars

  • You can add non-textual elements (e.g. horizontal rules and images) by using the editing icons.
  • The changes you make will only become effective after you have pressed the Save page button.
  • Use the Show preview button at the bottom of the page before saving your changes.
  • Avoid making changes to the structural elements of the calendar.

To add a footnote to a calendar entry, use the <R> editing icon. See also Help:Cite.

External Hyperlinks

The simplest way to add an external link is to use the "square bracket format" illustrated by the following:

Internal Hyperlinks

The simplest way to add links to QED pages or pages of similar websites such as Wikipedia is to use the "double square bracket" syntax. Some examples are:

For simple links (that is, for links in which there is no special anchor text), the "Insert/Edit Link" editing icon can also be used.

For external hyperlinks, a space separates the URL from the anchor text, but for internal hyperlinks, the vertical bar ("|", a.k.a. pipe ) is the separator.

Creating a monthly event calendar

To create a new calendar for a specific month, first determine the day of the week on which the first day of the month falls, and the number of days in the month. In the following, we'll assume that the first day of the month falls on a Monday and that there are 29 days in the month.

Next, edit the page on which the calendar is to be added, or edit the section in which the calendar is to be inserted.

If you are using the RTE, then here's one way to proceed:

  1. click on the editing icon that looks like {T}
  2. Add the following text (changing "Monday" and "29" as appropriate):
{{subst:Calendar for Monday|days=29}}
  1. Click OK and then save the page.
  2. Edit the page (or the relevant section of the page) again.

Adding several calendars to a single page

If a single page is to have more than one or two calendars, then it may be a good idea to have each calendar in its own section (perhaps using "Heading 2"). This will allow viewers to navigate to the relevant calendar using the Table of Contents that is automatically generated if there are more than a handful of sections.

To ensure that a Table of Contents is always generated on a specific page, enter the following text at the point where you want the TOC to appear: __TOC__

If you want to add several calendars at once, then it may be easier to use the "Wikitext" editing mode as you can then add all the "Calendar for" lines in one step.
