Notes for Students
The following notes may be useful for students for which a Course:FOLDER has been established on the QED server at qed.princeton.edu
One way to get there from a browser on campus: qed/Course:FOLDER
- For example: qed/Course:Tibetan Buddhism
- See also Navigation below.
The QED MediaWiki Service
qed.princeton.edu uses MediaWiki, the wiki engine underpinning Wikipedia. The same "wiki markup" is used, e.g. [[Course:Tibetan Buddhism]] specifies a link to a page like so: Course:Tibetan Buddhism
The MediaWiki engine has been modified in several ways for use at Princeton, notably:
- QED allows multiple wikispaces for projects and courses to be defined.
- QED supports various kinds of access restrictions.
- The use of relative links has been simplified.
Three important concepts are:
- Folders
- e.g. MG/
- Relative links
- e.g. [[/Examples]] produces Examples, a link to a subpage of the current page.
Navigation
Some ways to get to the Course:FOLDER page:
- direct method: type Course:FOLDER in the search box and press Go
- via Blackboard
- add a link to your User: page — [[Course:FOLDER]]
The "Index" feature on the Advanced Search page is also often helpful.
Viewing Images
- JPEG magnifying glass
Access Restrictions
Course: namespace is always restricted to logged in users.
Pages in the Course:FOLDER folder may be further restricted.
Restricting Access to Uploaded Files
To restrict read-access to an uploaded file and its description page, add the following text anywhere on the description page:
[[Category:Restricted]]
This will restrict read-access to logged-in members of the Princeton University community.
An alternative and more secure method for restricting access to logged-in users is to include a copyright symbol © as the first character of the name. You can use the string © to specify the copyright symbol.
There are other ways to restrict access to uploaded files, but they are more cumbersome. If you require more elaborate access control mechanisms, consider using Blackboard as the repository. In the near future, Xythos will also be available.
Blackboard
A special-purpose "Wiki" link may have been established for this course. If so:
- one way to register is to click the Wiki button on the Blackboard course menu.
See Help:Course
Creating a new page
For general information, see Help:New page (you can type in help new page).
Note that a link to a page can be created before the page exists. It appears like so.
